Mentors

Mr. Steven Raile

Job on the Team: Mr. Raile is the team's head mentor. He manages the mechanical, electrical, programming, and technical writing teams. He stays every day after school, helping the aforementioned committees function independently and as a group.
Job in our School: Mr. Raile educates freshman and sophomore classes in Robotics and Electronics. He is experienced in electrical and mechanical engineering, spent many years working in a Robotics shop, and is now passing his knowledge down not only as a mentor in FIRST, but also as a teacher at Staten Island Technical High School.
Because of his involvement,  Mr. Raile won the New York City Regional Woodie Flower's Award for being an inspiring leader to Team 375!
Also, Mr. Raile was named "New-Yorker of the Week" by the NY1 for his accomplishments in Robotics, Invention, and working with his students. Congratulations!

Mr. Shane Triano

Mr. Triano is a new recruit to the team. He joined our ranks as an industrial mentor last year when his son, our team’s alumni, graduated. He was always involved in our team’s affairs as a parent, and now he also set out to contribute his engineering knowledge to us as a mentor. Because Mr. Triano has a degree in electrical engineering and worked in the industry, we expect great things from his involvement.

Mr. Mark Erlenwein

Job on the Team: Mr. Erlenwein manages the fundraising, website, animation, media and graphics teams of Team 375. He is very involved in the team's financial development and oversees all of the paper work involved in the school's participation in Robotics.

Job in Our School: Mr. Erlenwein is the school's Assistant Principal, responsible for the Mathematics, Science, and Engineering departments. He is skilled with technology and makes sure that the entire school is up to date in the sphere of equipment.
Mr. Erlenwein, despite his serious responsibilities, leads a very interesting life and is very skilled with his electric guitar. Students always enjoy the music he composes using different tracks and computer software. In fact, Mr. Erlenwein just submitted a themed piece to a competition on behalf of the team.

Mentors of Team 375 are not just "mentors". They are innovators, guides, helpers, and most importantly - teammates. The Robotic Plague consists of many sub-sections: Mechanical Team, Electrical Team, Programming Team, Website-Development Team, Team of Technical Writers, Animation Team, Team of Graphics and Design, and many others. The Mentors are the crucial part of the team that brings all of the different divisions together, organizing them to achieve the final goal, a final product at the end of a build season. While mentors carry a large role during the period of six weeks when the team is working on the robot, they are not just temporary assistants. No. The mentors of Team 375 stay dedicated to the team the entire year round, advising and teaching students as to how to improve their skill-set in public speaking, presenting, creating business plans, technical writing, engineering, mathematics, and more. These outstanding individuals are the reason why Team 375 can call itself a "team".

The mentors assist students in fundraising, advise them in engineering, but also instructed them in life. When they are not inspiring, they are entertaining. Our mentors, in addition to being wells of knowledge, are also people. They are people with an exceptional sense of humor, unique personalities, and a vast variety of approaches. The students of the Robotic Plague admit that without the mentors' easy-going nature and wit, the Team would lose its charm, so well preserved by the mentors when the students momentarily lose their composure as a result of stress - all-too-family to most participants of FIRST.

What is so great about our mentors?
  • They have professional expertise in the fields of engineering, finance, communications, and education.

  • They inspire the students to innovate.
  • They educate the members of the team when they are lacking knowledge.
  • They do not let the team lose its spirit, even in the most difficult of circumstances.
  • They promote the spirit of charity and "others before self".
  • They work hard for the students' sakes.
  • They help us stay a family.
